Tragedy in Asia: Mynamar
Mynamar government officials have continued to block aide for victims of the cyclone that ripped through the small Burmese country in Southeast Asia. Over 28,000 people have died as a result of the natural disaster. The disaster continues at the hand of the Mynamar government. Monsoon season is now upon the remaining survivors. They have little shelter to protect their loved ones from the elements. The government claims they can survive on their own throughout the rainy season. They claim there is plenty of food because fish and large frogs are abundant during this season. This defines tragedy at the most inhumane level.Info I Scouted: Rising Gas Prices

Americans Can No Longer Afford the
Republican Rubber Stamp Congress
With skyrocketing gas prices, it is clear that the American people can no longer afford the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress and its failure to stand up to big oil and gas company cronies. Americans this week are paying $2.92 a gallon on average for regular gasoline - 34 cents higher than last month, and twice as much since President Bush first came to office.
On May 3rd, Republicans finally agreed to pass a Democratic bill to ban price gouging in the sale of fuels, set penalties for such price gouging, and permit states to bring lawsuits against wholesalers or retailers for price gouging. But Congress must do more. While consumers are facing pain at the pump, big oil is raking in outrageous record profits and passing out multi-million dollar retirement packages. These record gasoline prices and profits are the direct result of more than five years of failed energy policies. The Administration's energy policies were designed for and by special interests. After developing their energy policy in secret, the Cheney Energy Task Force's agenda has served the financial interests of the energy industry while consumers have suffered.
Now, five years later, consumers are wondering why prices are so high while profits continue to break records. In light of these high prices, Republicans are scrambling to run away from this failed record. Their latest proposals are just more of the same. The same policies that will protect billion dollar tax breaks for Big Oil, the same failed drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge and the same unnecessary environmental rollbacks. Republicans have offered sham proposals to give the appearance that they have changed their minds on energy subsidies, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, fuel efficiency standards, and cracking down on price gouging, along with some inadequate proposals for consumers and on energy independence.
Democrats know that we must move the country in a new direction. It is time to stand up to big oil and protect consumers from price gouging and supply manipulation that is artificially driving up the price of gasoline. It is time to end the billion dollar tax giveaways. Democrats are also fighting to break our dependence on foreign oil by making the real investments in alternative fuels, reducing our use of foreign oil and working to put alternative fuel vehicles on the road.
Learn more about both our short term and long term plans to address rising gas prices:
The Energy Consumer Relief Act (H.R. 4479). Democrats have proposed a bill to roll back billions in tax subsidies to big oil and gas companies, subsidies they testified they do not need, and to make that funding available to bring down heating costs under LIHEAP, and as tax credits for farms and as grants for small businesses.
The Democratic Plan for Real Security works for all Americans, not just big oil and gas CEOs. It would rescind billions in subsidies, tax breaks, and royalty relief given to big oil and gas companies, and provide relief to consumers, small businesses and farmers. The Democratic Plan will also free America from reliance on Middle East oil and achieve energy independence by 2020 by increasing development of domestic resources to produce alternative fuels; promoting hybrid and flex fuel cars; and enhancing energy efficiency.http://georgemiller.house.gov/gasandenergy.html
